Do you ...
  • Want to help those less fortunate than yourself?
  • Feel you would like to put something back into your local community?
  • Enjoy helping others achieve their goals?
  • Want to do something useful with your spare time?

Then think about volunteering at The Karten CTEC Centre!

All our courses are structured and led by fully qualified teachers with many years experience in this specialised field. However, the nature of our students and their diverse disabilities means volunteers are always welcome. Volunteers can provide invaluable support to both our students and staff alike, be it on a one to one basis for a particular student or group of students or as classroom support for the teachers.

Not only will you help our clients benefit from increased concentration, communication, social skills and greater independence you will be helping to greatly improve their self-esteem and quality of life at the same time as improving your own.

Volunteer Sara talks about her role at The Karten CTEC Centre

Why did you decide to become a volunteer?
I had been ill and had not been at work for a time and I wanted a reason to get out of the house and have some adult company. I thought it would boost my self-confidence.

What made you choose to volunteer at The Karten CTEC Centre?
A friend of a friend recommended I visit the Centre to see what it was all about. On my first visit I found everyone friendly and welcoming and I sat in on a class teaching session - I felt I fitted in.

What do you actually do as a volunteer?
I assist the tutors with whatever they need, so it is very varied. I might work with a small group of learning disabled students helping them with reading, writing, or cutting and sticking their work. I enjoy all the work including basic computing.

How long have you been volunteering and how often do you attend?
I started in mid January doing two mornings a week, now I do four mornings! I wasn't forced but I want to help the students get out and about.

What do you get out of being a volunteer?
Seeing the students looking happy and knowing that I am part of it.

What would you say to anyone thinking of doing voluntary work?
Definitely give it a go - it builds your confidence especially if you have been ill or stuck at home.
