The KARTEN
CTEC Centre, Crowthorne, Berkshire, a registered charity, is one of
the U.K.'s leading suppliers of computer-aided training and education
for disabled people, people with special needs and people with learning
disabilities. Whatever your disability or need, we will utilise
technology to try to alleviate some of the problems associated with your
disability.
Our educational services for the disabled include accredited courses, from pre-entry to level 2 of the Adult National Curriculum, basic literacy and numeracy to employment appropriate IT skills. Alternatively, we can address aspects of communication and organisational skills which may be equally important to you as a disabled person. We can also customise our training to your disability, whatever that disability may be. Some of our staff are disabled themselves so you are sure of an empathetic welcome. Our other educational services include training in using computers and associated specialist hardware and software for teachers working with disabled people, carers of the disabled, advocates of disabled people and relatives of the disabled. We also produce bespoke educational software. Background The Karten CTEC Centre is a specialist learning centre established by Ian Karten, MBE, in 1997 to provide computer-led education, at the highest level of excellence, to people with disabilities of all kinds. We aim to enable our students to enhance their quality of life, become more independent, improve their employment prospects and provide opportunities for individuals to achieve nationally recognised qualifications. Location The Centre is located within Norwood's Ravenswood Village, a residential settlement for adults with learning disabilities, in Crowthorne, Berkshire. It therefore provides an invaluable resource both for Ravenswood residents and local communities. We can advise and assist with transport to enable external students to access our services. Equal Opportunities The Centre is committed to and promotes Equal Opportunities, diversity and anti-discriminatory practice in both service provision and employment. Our aim is to ensure that everyone involved in our service, including users, family members, staff and volunteers, receives equal rights, equal access and equal treatment no matter who they are and that they will also respect those aims in their own practice. Disability Access The Centre is located in a purpose built single storey building with full disability access and adjacent parking for minibuses and cars. We are accessible to disabled people of all kinds including wheelchair users and the visually impaired with their guide dogs. Partnerships with other Organisations The Centre receives financial support from Wokingham Borough Council. Students who are eligible to attend Adult and Community Learning courses supported by WBC may do so free of tuition charges. We also work in partnership with a College of Further Education (BCA). Courses that lead to qualifications that form part of this collaboration are funded by the Learning Skills Council and are free of tuition charges to eligible students. We are also part of The Berkshire Neighbourhood Learning Centre Partnership and provide information and advice on learning and work through our "Nextstep" services. All new students are offered an Information and Advice session to discuss and record previous learning/work experiences, special needs and work and learning aims. Regular progress reviews and end of course interviews are also offered and act to maintain focus on learning and work. We are accredited to the national matrix Standard demonstrating that the services we provide are of consistent and high quality. The Centre is owned and managed by Norwood.
