At the KARTEN CTEC Centre we offer accredited courses, from pre-entry to level 2 of the Adult National Curriculum, basic literacy and numeracy skills to employment appropriate IT skills. All our courses are computer based and  student centred. Alternatively, we can address aspects of communication, organisational skills and quality of life which may be equally important to you as a disabled person.

Student Centred Education

Our courses can be customised to our students needs in the following ways:

  • Students can study the modules most relevant to their needs

  • Students can use the hardware and software mix best suited to their disability

  • Students can progress at their own pace

  • A course can be made more relevant to a particular student by incorporating the student's own visual aids, music, interests, etc.

If a student has difficulty using keyboard and mouse to access the computer, he/she can use another method of access, such as touchscreen or switch. We also have a wide range of software and associated software customisation capabilities to help the student, e.g. special touch type and spelling software for dyslexics and voice input word processors for the blind.

Accredited Courses

Our range of accredited courses changes over time as new courses become available and /or to meet student demand.

Currently the Basic Skills qualifications in numeracy, literacy and computer familiarisation courses we offer are OCN and OCR qualifications from pre-entry to level 2 as appropriate. Students can study at the Centre for a Basic Skills qualification in one or more of Numeracy, Literacy and Information Technology.

The basic computer foundation course we provide is Computer Literacy And Information (CLAIT). We offer suitable students the opportunity to take the introductory New CLAIT Certificate and then move on to the more advanced Diploma and Plus qualifications if they wish. Typical CLAIT modules are Word Processing, Spreadsheet, Database, Graphical Representation of Data, and On-Line Communications (Internet).

Maintaining Quality of Life

We can also help our students:

  • Maintain their quality of life by providing stimulating activities

  • Learn the concept of making choices

  • Develop their communication skills

Our approach is totally student centred, utilising our wide range of hardware and software.

Alternatively, if you work with disabled people (carer, teacher, relative, etc) we can train you so that you can help a disabled person in their home environment or at another establishment. Click here for further information on this training.
